Win to Mac? Read this first!

922066_macbook_pro_21.jpgI switched! I recently switched my desktop from WinXP to Tiger, and later upgraded to Leopard. Although the basics are simple, there are some habits I was accustomed to in Windows that needed to be UN-learned for OS X.

The most electrifying lesson was that, unlike in Windows where dragging a folder onto another folder merges the contents, in OS X, dragging a folder onto another folder actually replaces the entire folder. This was obviously a habit that needed to be un-learned immediately.

It was at that point, I decided I needed to read up to insure that there weren’t other differences of which I was unaware. The best book I found was Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition (Missing Manual). This book is full of details and can also be used as a reference manual for questions you may have.

If you’re thinking about switching, read Switch 101 - Migrate to Mac at Apple’s site first. It will get you going and give you a good overview of the steps.

Because I have a lot of software applications that I continue to use in Windows, after much review I chose to go with VMware’s Fusion. I have had zero issues with it and the applications run flawlessly. To install Windows, you must have a full version and not an upgrade. They recommend Windows XP Home version.
