Eliminate monthly phone charges?

Photo by SanberdooThink you can’t avoid monthly telephone service charges? If you’ve looked into VOIP - voice over internet protocol - previously, the services have improved. I recently researched VOIP options/reviews. You can take your router / box with you when you move** and keep your number. There is, however, a new kid on the block called Ooma.

Similar to all services, Ooma sends the router equipment to connect to the internet; however, it has some significant differences. The primary difference is that once the equipment has been purchased, there are no additional monthly fees — zero monthly fees. The second difference is that you can choose to keep a local service landline or eliminate the landline. Ooma ’shares’ unused lines: similar to Skype, Ooma uses peer-to-peer technology.

I chose to eliminate both of my landlines and go with Ooma. I have two lines (on one number), free long distance (U.S. only) plus all of the usual features: called ID, voice mail, 3-way calling, one-button ‘do not disturb,’ etc.

Currently Ooma is only available in the U.S.Price is a one-time $400 for the Hub (or base) and an additional $40 if you want the Ooma Scout. Although not required for one-line use, you must purchase at least one Scout if you want to use the ‘instant second line.’

That’s it! As long as Ooma remains in business, I pay zero monthly fees. Although U.S. long distance is free, there is a charge for calls to other countries. For example, calls to Greece are approximately 3 cents per minute.Read the details at Ooma’s site.

**Note: If you move, be certain to change your address in the 911 emergency system. Realize that if your power is out, so is your telephone service with any VOIP service.
