Eliminate monthly phone charges?

Photo by SanberdooThink you can’t avoid monthly telephone service charges? If you’ve looked into VOIP - voice over internet protocol - previously, the services have improved. I recently researched VOIP options/reviews. You can take your router / box with you when you move** and keep your number. There is, however, a new kid on the block called Ooma. Continue Reading »

Drag a new route on your GoogleMap

Published by Simon under technology

788960_a_map_of_rome.jpgI watched a clip from David Pogue’s Pogie Awards and learned that when getting directions on GoogleMaps, you can just drag the Google-suggested route line to another street/highway and GoogleMaps will show you a route using the street selected with your mouse (drag). Browser bookmarks sync

Published by Simon under Mac

I found a little application to synchronize bookmarks across Mac browsers. It’s called BookIt and costs $12. You can download a trial version. Yes, you can always import and export bookmarks but I find that I work in several different browsers for various reasons. With this I can set a ‘master’ browser bookmark table and sync all other browsers with it. That way I always have all bookmarks on all browsers without duplicates.I want to point out that there are others out there and of course there are online services which do similar syncs so you can have your bookmarks wherever you may log onto the internet. Those will be for another post — along with some for the PC folks as well.

Who will stop the SPAM?

Photo by Stefano BrivioStill getting SPAM? Getting more SPAM now than several months ago? Do you have too many legitimate messages going to SPAM? I recommend trying one of the following options.

Gmail. As noted in an earlier post, Gmail has the best SPAM filter around. It is extremely accurate. Many users now have all of their email accounts routed through Gmail to get the benefit of Gmail’s SPAM blocker. Gmail can be set up to send pop3 account mail as well. You still need an invitation to sign up for Gmail. Continue Reading »

Published by Simon under Windows

Today’s question of the day was: “Can I set up a viable working PC with only free software? The answer: yes. Here is a list of absolutely free and better than average software that you can download and install on a PC that already has a Windows operating system, e.g., Windows XP, installed. You will need access to internet service, for which you may have to pay. You will also need to verify the ’system requirements’ for each of the applications mentioned to insure that they will run on your specific CPU. Take a look at these free software applications.
