Drag a new route on your GoogleMap

Published by Simon under technology

788960_a_map_of_rome.jpgI watched a clip from David Pogue’s Pogie Awards and learned that when getting directions on GoogleMaps, you can just drag the Google-suggested route line to another street/highway and GoogleMaps will show you a route using the street selected with your mouse (drag). This is something you really have to see to appreciate — just try it!

Tech alone is not enough - what about leftovers?

Published by Simon under misc, students

Photo by Eric / Paper or PlasticChef at home? We can’t live with technology alone — we still like to eat! There is an old cookbook called Potluck Cookery by Beverly Pepper. Look at the leftovers you have and find the recipes that can be created from those ingredients.

Since this cookbook, newer ones have been written on the same premise. However, the really great news is that similar information can now be found online at BigOven.com. Enter three ingredients that are available in the house and click on search. More than several recipes which can be made with those ingredients then appear!

It’s due when??? Use a homework manager

Photo by Darren HesterHere’s a homework manager for students with a Mac. It’s called SchoolHouse 2, tracks everything for you and is free. Trackable are your reading, projects, papers, and grades (which can be calculated). As the site puts it, this way you’ll have no surprises at the end of the quarter/semester. You can look at everything due a week from Friday or every due date for a particular class.

I’ll be searching for a similar application for PC users. Stay tuned.

Please be sure you’re backing up your hard drive or printing out the information daily. The only thing worse than dogs eating homework is the fact that hard drives crash!

Can you avoid hospital infections?

Published by Simon under health

Be a proactive patient! A recent Mayo Clinic post listed tips for preventing hospital infection. Discussion points include selecting your surgeon and asking about pre-surgery antibiotics. Two of the points they mention are suggestions that many articles discuss but that most of us are reluctant to act upon:

On the General tab, several items from the top, you will see Keyboard shortcuts with buttons to turn on or off the shortcuts. Here is a link to the Gmail shortcuts page so you can print a copy.

Browser bookmarks sync

Published by Simon under Mac

I found a little application to synchronize bookmarks across Mac browsers. It’s called BookIt and costs $12. You can download a trial version. Yes, you can always import and export bookmarks but I find that I work in several different browsers for various reasons. With this I can set a ‘master’ browser bookmark table and sync all other browsers with it. That way I always have all bookmarks on all browsers without duplicates.I want to point out that there are others out there and of course there are online services which do similar syncs so you can have your bookmarks wherever you may log onto the internet. Those will be for another post — along with some for the PC folks as well.

Undeserved grade in class?

Published by Simon under students

Photo by David BleasdaleIf you seriously believe that you deserve a better grade in a course, what can you do about it? There is a wikiHow on How to Get a Professor to Change Your Grade. There are currently eight steps to consider and follow. It’s worth a read to determine whether you have the information to back up your claim. And since it’s a wiki, it can be edited.
